SA20 2027 teams list and home grounds

Each franchise plays five home matches and five away matches during the league stage. Select a team below for its captain, coach and current squad position.

Pretoria Capitals represent Pretoria but play their home games in Centurion. SA20’s fixture list labels their venue as Centurion; the ground is SuperSport Park.

Captains, coaches and confirmed player updates

The players highlighted here are selected confirmed squad members. They are not complete rosters or predicted playing XIs. The league’s Season 5 squad update lists retained players, pre-signings and players not retained separately.

Durban’s Super Giants

Captain: Aiden Markram. Head coach: Lance Klusener.

Durban’s Super Giants have completed their 19-player roster, with Sam Curran joining as a pre-signing. Heinrich Klaasen is their wildcard, while retained players include Jos Buttler, Kane Williamson, Devon Conway and Sunil Narine.

DSG’s preparation can centre on selecting combinations from an assembled squad. There are no auction vacancies in their announced roster. Noor Ahmad and David Wiese are among the players not retained for Season 5.

Their first home match is against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Kingsmead on 21 January 2027, starting at 17:30 SAST.

Joburg Super Kings

Captain: To be confirmed. Head coach: Albie Morkel.

Joburg Super Kings have the most recruitment work remaining: six auction places and a separate wildcard signing. Jason Holder joins retained players including Donovan Ferreira, James Vince, Akeal Hosein and Leus du Plooy.

Faf du Plessis, Imran Tahir and Wiaan Mulder are on the not-retained list. Faf is therefore not a confirmed member of the current Season 5 squad. Albie Morkel takes over as head coach following Stephen Fleming’s departure, while the captaincy remains open.

JSK have R20.6 million available, the largest remaining auction purse. Their first home match is against Sunrisers Eastern Cape at Wanderers on 23 January at 17:30 SAST.

MI Cape Town

Captain: Rashid Khan. Head coach: Robin Peterson.

MI Cape Town have pre-signed Will Jacks alongside a retained group that includes Ryan Rickelton, Nicholas Pooran, George Linde and wildcard Kagiso Rabada. The 2025 champions have 13 announced players and six auction places available.

Trent Boult and Rassie van der Dussen are among their released players. With R9.35 million remaining, MI Cape Town still need to complete a substantial part of the roster. Their auction recruitment must include at least one more qualifying South African Under-23 player.

MI Cape Town’s first home match is against Joburg Super Kings at Newlands on 20 January at 17:30 SAST.

Paarl Royals

Captain: David Miller. Head coach: Trevor Penney.

Paarl Royals have completed their 19-player squad after signing Azmatullah Omarzai and bringing back Joe Root as their wildcard. Retained players include Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Bjorn Fortuin, Rubin Hermann, Sikandar Raza and Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

Root’s return restores a familiar batting partner for Pretorius, while Omarzai adds another all-round option. Paarl have no auction vacancies. Rovman Powell and Eshan Malinga are among the players not retained.

The Royals begin their home campaign against Joburg Super Kings at Boland Park on 18 January at 17:30 SAST.

Pretoria Capitals

Captain: Keshav Maharaj. Head coach: Sourav Ganguly.

Pretoria Capitals welcome back Phil Salt and have also pre-signed Matthew Short. Their retained group includes Dewald Brevis, Sherfane Rutherford, Lungi Ngidi and wildcard Andre Russell.

The Capitals have 14 announced players and five auction vacancies, with R1.475 million remaining. That is the smallest remaining purse among the four teams with auction places to fill. Will Jacks, who was not retained by Pretoria, has signed for MI Cape Town.

Pretoria’s first home match is against Durban’s Super Giants at SuperSport Park on 19 January at 17:30 SAST.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

Captain: Tristan Stubbs. Head coach: Adrian Birrell.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape begin their title defence with 17 players announced and two auction vacancies. Mitchell Marsh and Rishad Hossain join a retained group that includes Quinton de Kock, Marco Jansen, Anrich Nortje and Matthew Breetzke. Jansen is their wildcard.

Jonny Bairstow and Beyers Swanepoel are among the players not retained. With R3.6 million remaining and only two auction places to fill, Sunrisers have kept most of their squad in place.

Their first home match also opens the tournament: Sunrisers Eastern Cape vs Pretoria Capitals at St George’s Park on 17 January, starting at 15:30 SAST.

Which SA20 teams still have auction places?

Four teams have a combined 19 places available at the 7 October 2026 auction. Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have already completed their squads.

Announced-player totals count the names in the published retention and pre-signing lists, including confirmed wildcards. JSK’s 12 players plus six auction places account for 18 squad members; their remaining place is the unannounced wildcard. The deadline to confirm that wildcard is 30 December 2026.

Under the official Season 5 auction rules, each squad has 19 places, including one wildcard. The wildcard’s league fee sits outside the R42 million salary cap. JSK and MI Cape Town must each recruit at least one more qualifying Under-23 player.

How are SA20 teams connected to IPL franchises?

All six SA20 franchises belong to ownership groups with IPL interests. That explains the shared Super Giants, Super Kings, MI, Royals, Capitals and Sunrisers branding.

The SA20 and IPL teams have separate squads and compete in different tournaments. An IPL player is not automatically part of the corresponding SA20 team.
