For fans waiting to see which South African and overseas players will enter the auction, the shortlist is the next announcement to watch. Inclusion will confirm a player’s place on the auction list, rather than a contract with a team.
Where to check the SA20 auction player list
Fans can check the league’s official Season 5 auction page for the player-list announcement and any accompanying document.
When looking for an SA20 2027 auction list PDF, check that the document is labelled Season 5. Lists from previous editions can still appear in search results and contain players who have since been retained, released or signed elsewhere.
The release date should also be kept separate from auction day: 2 October is the scheduled list publication, while bidding takes place on Wednesday, 7 October.
What will the player shortlist clarify?
The main question is which players will be available to the bidding franchises. Publication will allow supporters to check individual names against the official shortlist, including overseas entrants and South African players seeking a squad place.
Player-specific reserve prices will also matter when those details are published. SA20’s auction rules give each entrant a reserve price, meaning the minimum amount at which that player can be bought. A final sale price can be higher if franchises compete for the same player.
Until the list is available, a player’s release from a previous team should not be treated as confirmation that they will enter this auction. Retained players and completed pre-signings can already be found in the SA20 2027 squad lists.
Registered players are not automatically shortlisted
SA20’s registration window closed at 17:00 SAST on 14 September 2026. Registering expressed a player’s interest in being considered; the auction shortlist determines which names progress to bidding.
The league’s registration announcement also explains that replacement players during the tournament are selected from the registration list. The wider registered pool therefore has a purpose beyond the auction shortlist.
Fans should distinguish three stages when following updates: registration, inclusion on the auction list and a completed signing. A name appearing at one stage does not automatically establish the next.
What happens after the list is released?
Four franchises have 19 auction places remaining: Joburg Super Kings and MI Cape Town have six each, Pretoria Capitals have five, and Sunrisers Eastern Cape have two. Durban’s Super Giants and Paarl Royals have completed their squads.
The shortlist will establish the available candidates before those remaining places are contested on 7 October. Successful purchases and unsold players will then be recorded in the auction results.
