Paarl Royals squad 2027: all 19 confirmed players

The Royals have retained 17 players and added Azmatullah Omarzai and Joe Root through pre-signings. Root occupies the wildcard place within the 19-player squad.

Paarl’s retained South African Under-23 group includes Lhuan-dre Pretorius, Nqobani Mokoena and JJ Basson. The squad therefore already exceeds the league’s minimum requirement of two qualifying players.

Paarl Royals schedule 2027

Paarl Royals begin at home against Joburg Super Kings on 18 January 2027 at 17:30 SAST. The opener starts at 20:30 in Pakistan and 21:00 in India.

The Royals play five home and five away league matches. All dates below are in 2027, with start times shown in South African Standard Time, SAST (UTC+2).

Joe Root returns and Azmatullah Omarzai joins

Joe Root returns to Paarl Royals after scoring 279 runs at an average of 55.80 during his previous SA20 campaign in 2025. He also took five wickets that season, giving the Royals an additional off-spin option alongside his batting.

Root’s previous partnership with Lhuan-dre Pretorius gives his return a specific connection to the retained squad. Pretorius made 97 on his SA20 debut, with Root finishing unbeaten on 62 in the same successful chase against Sunrisers Eastern Cape.

Azmatullah Omarzai is the other pre-signed addition. The Afghanistan all-rounder joins fellow Afghanistan international Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the squad.

Which players were not retained?

Paarl Royals did not retain Okuhle Cele, Vishen Halambage, Eshan Malinga, Nqaba Peter, Rovman Powell or Waqar Salamkheil for Season 5. None appears in the currently announced 19-player squad.

Will Paarl Royals take part in the SA20 auction?

Paarl Royals have no places to fill at the 7 October 2026 player auction. SA20 lists their squad as complete, alongside Durban’s Super Giants. The auction’s available places belong to the other four franchises.

A completed squad does not establish that the franchise has spent every rand of its salary allowance. The confirmed position is that Paarl have no current auction vacancies.

Counting the announced list gives 11 South African players and eight overseas players. Seven overseas players occupy regular squad places; Root holds the separate wildcard place. This fits the league’s structure of 18 regular players plus one wildcard.

Who are Paarl Royals’ captain and coach?

David Miller is Paarl Royals’ captain for SA20 2027. The South African batter has led the franchise since the first season.

Trevor Penney is the head coach. SA20 lists the former Zimbabwe international as holding the role since Season 3. Miller and Penney remain in charge as the Royals prepare with a completed squad.

Boland Park: Paarl Royals’ home ground

Paarl Royals represent Paarl in South Africa’s Western Cape and play their home matches at Boland Park. The ground’s grass embankments and mountain backdrop are part of the matchday setting, with supporters wearing the Royals’ pink colours.

The stadium is on Langenhoven Street, Paarl. For Season 5 tickets, the official Paarl Royals ticketing page currently offers early-access registration and describes sales as coming soon. General ticket sales are planned for later in 2026; no match-specific price is confirmed here.

Who owns Paarl Royals?

Paarl Royals are owned by Royals Sports Group, which also owns Rajasthan Royals. Paarl compete in South Africa’s SA20, while Rajasthan Royals play in the Indian Premier League.
